Description
DescriptionA Chinese fan that is constructed with bamboo spokes and decorated with a hand-painted design of an immortal child cavorting with a dragon in the clouds. The painting is very fine and detailed. It has artistic use of white for the mist and a small amounts of red for fabric and the dragon’s mouth. The backside is decorated with script.
The fan is accompanied by a rectangular case constructed from wood and covered with black leather. The leather is decorated in a white and gold design of a dragon in the clouds in pursuit of the flaming pearl of wisdom. The interior of the wooden box has been painted with black and red Chinese characters. The mouth edges are painted in gilt with a leaf pattern. The lid and base fit together nicely and has a tooled brass latch.
There is a gilt mark on the front right corner of the case. It shows a cartouche with the word Canton in cursive and Chinese characters above it.
MEASUREMENTS
Case measures 11” (28.0 cm) long x 2 ¼” (5.7 cm) deep x 1 ¾” (4.4 cm) tall.
Fan measures 14” (35.6 cm) wide x 9 1/8” (23.2 cm) tall.
Weighs 11.2 oz (320 g)
CONDITION
The fan is in very good shape considering the age. The left corner edge shows a small loss and there are a couple of white paint errors and a smudge near the top left. The bamboo has an aged oxidized look. The spokes form a raised design in the paper. The fan still opens and closes nicely. I believe the fan and case were always together.
There are no breaks or cracks in the case. There is wear and small losses to the leather especially on the corners, a loss of a small patch of leather on the base, and scuffing to the leather on the edge of the back of base and small areas throughout. The lid top has scuffing, as well but they don’t disturb the overall design. There is also wear to the interior edges of both the base and lid. The brass latch shows oxidation and rust spotting.
