What is Charmeuse Silk?
Silk is a natural protein fibre which can be woven into different types of textiles including Silk Chiffon, Crepe, Shantong, Habotai and Silk Charmeuse. No one uses Chiffon Silk to make bedding. Most people use Habotai or Charmeuse Silk, Habotai weave does not have a smooth silky surface like Charmeuse. Charmeuse weave and Satin weave are essentially the same, Tight Heavyweight weave with a glossy surface and a dull back. We use the word Charmeuse instead of the word Satin because Satin has been hijacked by Polyester manufacturers that use Polyester fibres in a Satin weave to create the illusion of Silk and then incorrectly call it Satin. Our Silk beddings are made from Silk in a Charmeuse weave.
The History of Silk
Silk has been known to man for approx. 5000 years. Its discovery is attributed to Xiling, wife of the Chinese Emperor Huang-Di.
This is how the story of one of the most elegant natural fabrics success got started.
Silk came from China to Persia, Korea and Japan. Up until the 13th century silk was only available as an oriental import and only very wealthy people could afford it. In Europe, while under Norman Rule, Southern Italy became an important centre for breeding silkworms and spinning silk. For a long time Italy remained the leading silk country in Europe until France expanded its silk weaving in the middle of the 17th century and surpassed Italy.
Compared to the world's total fibre production, silk fibres only make up less than 1%.
